Downtown From Behind (DFB)

Posted: 31/10/2010 by Eric L in City

downtownfrombehind is a photographic project capturing subjects riding their bike from behind on every street, some 200+ streets, avenues and lanes below 14th in New York City.

The concept is an environmental portrait for each street and its subject.  The goal to highlight a unique set of individuals who have had an impact, previously or currently on downtown New York City, making downtown what it is today.

Subjects photographed to date have included designers, musicians, artists, restaurateurs, entrepreneurs, hoteliers, academics and celebrity activists. As well as highlighting some of downtown’s most dynamic individuals in their respective fields, downtownfrombehind is passionate about sustainability and a greener environment.

A “Forever” Bike Is Reborn

Our homey John came back from Shanghai with this Forever frame repainted in military olive. Guys at Alleycat Fixed Gear and Bike 7 had to go the whole nine yards gathering all necessary parts to build it up. It’s no ordinary project. But it’s all worthwhile seeing how happy John is traversing traffic (wrong way even) with the reborn phoenix.

The road race will have a start and finish on Geels Hill in the municipality of Rudersdal. Some good climbs in the hills to the north of the city and a beautiful scenic area. According to the head of the Danish Cyclists Union, former racing cyclist Jesper Worre;

“We have created an interesting and demanding circuit going up Geels Hill. With no less than 20 laps of 14 km, we are convinced that it will be a very tuff and varied World Championship in Denmark 2011″.

It’s Your Ride

It’s an old edit but I am totally amazed by the cinematic feel of it.

“The film spins a visual ballad between the two cyclists experiencing the city in their own unique ways. Both cyclists are city dwellers who amidst the chaos of the concrete jungle have created a private and peaceful psychological space as they traverse the streets. They are both alone and yet they are both very much aware of each others presence. The film speaks to the harmony with one’s environment that can be found while riding a bicycle in a city and the synchronistic connection we can have with those we have not even met.” – Cinecycle.

The film was shot with a Varicam and Zeiss prime lenses.

Rapha Rendezvous for iPhone

We all know the problem. Organising a ride with friends. Or maybe not friends, more likely adversarial training partners, or perhaps someone you have never ridden with before. Arranging meeting for a ride can be a thankless task spread over a multitude of devices and communication methods.

And then, further to this complication of arrangement is the uncertainty involved in the act of meeting. An unforeseen puncture, a headwind from hell, getting lost, another unforeseen puncture (after two they become foreseen) – the epic could begin before the planned epic (or perhaps just a light training spin) has even begun. “Where the hell is Fausto?”

Developed for road cyclists, Rapha Rendezvous has been designed to make meeting up for group rides easier.
